WOOD BLEEDING

The most important step before starting a Tjhoko Paint project is preparation – cleaning your surface thoroughly with lacquer thinners, multiple times if needed to remove all surface oils, dirt and grime to ensure your paint adheres well to your surface. 

However, regardless of how intensively a surface has been cleaned, from time to time you may experience bleeding when painting wooden furniture that has been previously varnished or oiled. Bleeding can be identified as yellow, or off white blotches and stains that appear on your newly painted surface – this is as a result of oils and varnishes trapped in the wood being brought to the surface.

We do not advise painting furniture that has been oiled and or varnished within the last 6 months, or to sand your wooden item before painting as it opens up the “dry” layer on top, resulting in the oils inside possibly making their way to the surface.  

Here are the steps to follow should you experience bleed using Tjhoko Clear Glaze as a barrier between the bleeding and the paint coat.

1. Apply Tjhoko Paint undiluted clear glaze to the sections experiencing bleed with a paint brush and allow to dry for 30 – 40 minutes.
2. Apply a second coat of undiluted clear glaze, allow to dry for 30 – 40 minutes.
3. Apply a third coat of undiluted clear glaze. 
4. Once you have applied at least three coats of our undiluted clear glaze – allow to fully cure for 24 hours.
5. After 24 hours you can repaint.
