Surface Preparation for Tile Roofs
Surface Preparation for Tile Roofs
Tile Roof Preparation:
- Wash the roof first. This is not only to clean off the dirt, but also to remove any algae growth and airborne pollution residue. Use a general purpose degreaser soap diluted with water. Don’t use any soap that contains ammoniac.
- Check if the roof tiles are brittle and powdery. If the tiles are brittle the paint won’t stick for long. The tiles then need to be coated with a thinned-down coat of Tjhoko Paint Bonding Liquid. Tjhoko Paint Bonding Liquid needs to be thinned down to a ratio of 20L Bonding Liquid and 5L Turpentine. If the Bonding Liquid is not thinned-down enough it will also affect the adhesion of the paint. The Bonding Liquid should be thinned-down enough so that it does not leave a shiny surface. Leave the Bonding Liquid for 24 hours to dry. This is recommended for new Roof tiles as it will increase the spreading rate of the paint.
- Start now with waterproofing 2-3 coats of Tjhoko Paint Umbrella with built in fibre. Wait 3-4 hours between coats, thereafter two coats of Tjhoko Paint, Roof Paint can be applied. Wait 4-6 hours between coats.
- By applying the paint with a roof brush you get a thicker film thickness and a more durable finish.
- Paint between 9am and 4pm in summer and between 10am and 3pm in winter. Low temperatures and moisture as a result of dew and frost will impact on the performance of the paint.
How To Store Your Roof Paint
How To Store Your Roof Paint
Properly storing your Roof Paint will help extend its life. To keep your paint free from contamination, follow these tips:
- Avoid painting directly from the bucket. Instead, decant into a paint tray and paint from there.
- Always properly seal the bucket to help prevent air from seeping in and contaminating the paint.
- Store your paint in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
