Techniques

For very oily/polished furniture – clean with lacquer thinners before painting. Apply the paint and wait in between coats for the paint to dry. Once the final coat has been applied wait for at least 4 hours. Wait at least 6 months before painting on a newly varnished surface. Sometimes even waiting overnight may be best depending on how oily it is. Don’t fear though, you will have the confidence to read the paint and furniture relationship. Look for how the paint went on originally, was it streaky? Or try the scratch test with your nail. If the paint does come off, which it might, then simply wait a little longer. Next follow the glazing process should you require a water-resistant or UV-resistant surface. (Look under glazes)

After the shabby look – don’t wait too long to start sanding, especially on dry or untreated wood as Tjhoko will stick quite quickly. You may build some pretty big muscles otherwise. Remember to use grit 60/80 or 100

All you need to do is apply another coat of Tjhoko to the discoloured or yellow areas..

I have found when painting in my garage, some dust or fine particles do sometimes blow onto my furniture. Although Tjhoko leaves such a lovely finish, due to the environment you may be painting in, you may notice some little particles have got stuck along the way, especially during drying time. I will use sandpaper 400 just to lightly sand over my final piece to give it that smooth look should I need to, but only if I need to.

Tjhoko-ing the perfect underplates

Preparation:

Always ensure that surface being painted is clean and grease-free, no need to apply a primer or to sand. If it was previously waxed, then you’ll have to sand before painting.
If unsure if the surface is clean, wipe it down with a cloth dipped in some Lacquer Thinners. (Do not use turpentine or benzene as it leaves behind an oily residue)
Our under plate is plywood surface. No need to sand or prime.

Step by step for Easter flower vases

Steps:

Apply masking tape onto glass jars.
Make sure that no paint can leak in underneath the masking tape. Firmly secure masking tape onto the glass jar.
Paint straight onto the glass in the colours of your choice.
We used Cement Grey and Olivia’s Pale.
Wait for paint to dry and then remove the masking tape.
Paint takes longer to cure on a smooth surface like glass. It will still take more or less 20minutes to dry but will need to be left overnight before washing it. It is not dishwasher safe and also should not be soaked in water, but can be rinsed and should be dried immediately.

Step by step when Stenciling on fabric

Steps:

Select a stencil in a design of your choice
We used the Easter Border
Hold stencil firmly onto the fabric.
Use a stencil brush and dip it into your paint. Remove most of the paint from the stencil brush. The less paint the better, else the paint will leak in underneath your stencil.
Move the stencil brush in circular movements over the stencil, ensuring that you don’t move from the border of the stencil onto the fabric. Stay inside the design of the stencil.
Lift the stencil and repeat the process to complete the border design.

White Wash

This is mainly used on untreated/new wood and really gives that ‘beach’ look and feel.

Apply a thin layer of paint and with a damp cloth wipe the paint down in the direction of the wood grain. This must be done within a few seconds.

If you want more coverage then add more paint, remembering to always paint and wipe down in the direction of the grain.

You can also dip the damp cloth into the paint and wipe it down until you get the coverage you want.

Another way is to create a sealed White wash effect by following these easy steps:

1.Mix Paint (in a colour of your choice), Clear Glaze and water together in ratios of a third each.
Quantities will depend on the size of the surface you would like to White Wash e.g. 200 ml Tjhoko Paint, 200 ml Glaze, 200 ml water.

2.Dampen a colourless cloth and dip it into your mixture and simply wipe onto the surface. Once again in the same direction as wood grain.

3.This will create a sealed washed surface in one easy step.

Tips:
If the wash (mix) is too light, add more paint.
If the wash (mix) is too dark, add more Clear Glaze.

One Colour Distressing

One of the all time favourite techniques! Simply paint your piece of furniture and wait to dry. With sandpaper (60/80/100) sand areas where you want the wood to come through.

This easily creates that shabby/distressed look. Your call if you want to seal or not for high traffic areas seal with the glaze.

Tip: For dry or untreated wood – don’t wait too long to sand and easy on the hand (don’t be too rough)

Two Colour Distressing

Don’t want the wood to come through but are still after that distressed look? Apply your first colour and wait to dry.

Then apply your second coat which will be your dominant colour that you mainly want to see.

Once the second coat is dry then start sanding. Bear in mind you can oversand, so go gently first time round until you get into the rhythm and are happy with the sanding balance you are after. Use grit 180/220.

Tip: This is when reading your wood is important. On oily wood you may need to wait 4 hours (or longer) until painting again. If your wood is oily then clean with white wine vinegar before painting. This refers only to the base colour (1st layer).

Stencilling

Hello to a whole new look. Stencilling is so in and can transform your masterpiece.

Adhere your stencil with stencil spray, but also light tack tape will work such as masking tape.

Dip your stencil brush in your paint and just like dry brushing, make sure that there is very little paint on your brush (very important), else paint will seep under your stencil. Some people like to distress their stencil look, so after it has dried then you can sand lightly with 180/220 in the same direction.

Tip: Do not sand the stencil in different directions….only in one direction if you are after the distressed look and use very little paint.
